When intimate content is shared without consent, the subject of the image deserves protection regardless of the context of its production (voluntary or involuntary, stolen, extorted or generated by AI). According to the Revenge Porn Hotline in the UK, 99% of deepfake abuse harm women, while 93% of the sextortion cases are reported by men. Half of the victims contemplate suicide, according to various studies, and dozens of suicides globally can be attributed to this type of violence. Much remains to be done to collectively address this harm and its many manifestations. This session will discuss the existing legal frameworks and how possible gaps can be addressed to place victim-based decision making at the core of any regulatory or technological responses.
