(C16) (INCYBER) Securing the Future: Digital Identity Serving Online Childhood
Minors are increasingly being exposed to significant sources of harm online, even facing potentially life-threatening dangers. This ranges from access to highly harmful inappropriate content to relentless encounters with harassing behaviors, as well as the possibility of unknowingly encountering predatory adults.
While education and the use of existing technologies such as parental controls are absolutely indispensable tools for protecting minors online, it is clear that they are insufficient. Furthermore, the obligations imposed on publishers of websites and digital services reserved for adults are neither respected nor enforced, leading to the perpetuation of an unacceptable situation in which minors effectively have unfiltered access to the most inappropriate content.
The work carried out by the task force established by the Human Technology Foundation and Project Liberty highlights the significant progress made in the development of digital identity solutions, which now enable adequate protection of minors online while respecting the privacy of users of these solutions. These efforts also underscore the challenges that must be overcome to effectively deploy such solutions.
